Rebounding

14/4/2015

Below is an article link you may find interesting. This made me think of rising, sinking, opening and closing inherent within our Taichichuan movements.

Interesting article John, thank you.

I’m always concerned about the ‘next best thing’ in exercise although rebounding has been around for a number of years. Rebounding ticks some of the boxes I need ticked when looking at exercise, but unfortunately not many. As a young physical education teacher I took my athletics team to a big competition after having introduced them to trampolining. I had a couple of excellent sprinters who should have been guaranteed gold medals in their events. Yes, I’d succeeded in keeping their heart rates at the necessary level however the rebounding effect also reduced their ability to use their legs effectively to produce the speed required. We returned, with one very chastened phys ed teacher, to a more orthodox training regime. Not only is rising and sinking, opening and closing inherent in our tai chi movements but they are done agains gravity creating resistance which helps us to use our muscles in a functional way and to continue building our bones. We use our muscles, fascia etc in a way designed to enhance our every day activities making it a very effective exercise form. I know that tai chi is much more than just exercise, but from a purely movement point of view I want to be doing things which enhance my everyday activities and help me to age gracefully or maybe even disgracefully!

Thanks Fiona, for sharing your experience with rebounding. I've not had experience with the use of trampolines for fitness or conditioning nor have I heard of it before I read the article so can't talk of the benefits or otherwise. Still, like you I do know the rebounding idea as practiced in Taichichuan is very beneficial for health and for pretty much the same reasons you outline.

Keep well
John H
